My credit journey began back in 2014, when I was waiting tables. I decided it was time to take control of my credit history and build a better financial future.
My first step was opening a $300 secured credit card at Bank of America.
After six months of on-time payments, I began receiving credit card offers and opened a few second-tier starter cards such as Credit One and First Premier — the kind that charge a monthly fee but help you build credit.
Within a year of consistent on-time payments, I started receiving credit limit increases and eventually applied for top-tier cards like American Express Platinum, Apple Card, and American Express Gold.
I was approved for all of them. Over time, my credit score rose from the 500s to a 740.
Around that time, I entered the trucking industry. After two years of working, I bought my own truck and became an independent owner-operator.
While running my business, I continued improving my credit and began helping others do the same.
Then, everything changed. When the war in Ukraine began, the U.S. stopped buying fuel from Russia.
As a result, diesel prices skyrocketed, my expenses soared, and freight rates dropped. My weekly
income fell from $10,000 to $5,000, but my overhead remained the same.
By 2023, I lost everything
